thick tassel dwarf1 maps to a QTL for spikelet density in long tassel branches
— Lunde, C; Schultz, J; Rocheford, T; Hake, S
A CAPS marker was developed and used to map the thick tassel dwarf1 gene onto the 292 line IBM mapping population. td1 mutants have fasciated ears, increased tassel spikelet density on the main rachis and the lowest tassel branch as well as an increase in floral organ number. The td1 gene was mapped to bin 5.03 at location 250.5, between SSR markers umc1355 (246.9) and mmp108a (254.6). It overlaps QTL for side spikelet density (on the tassel long branches) LOD=2.17, total spikelets LOD=3.93, and total meristems LOD=4.05. Total spikelets is an estimate of the total number of spikelets on the main rachis calculated by multiplying the number of spikelets on 4cm of the mid-section of the main rachis by the length of the rachis and dividing by 2cm. Total meristems is an estimate of long branch and spikelet initiation calculated by adding the value for total spikelets to the number of primary tassel branches.
