ANNUAL CALL FOR MNL NOTES - MNL 72, 1998
...MNL is now a Virtual Hotletter and Linkletter!

EXECUTE-IVE SUMMARY
Send your MNL Notes, hard copy and electronic, anytime; they will go on the Web verbatim, and will be printed in the annual issue. Submission information is given below -- send your items now to share with Cooperators in this fresh, current form.

HOW TO SUBMIT NOTES
This is an informal newsletter by which working research information on the genetics and cytogenetics of maize is shared. The information and data are shared by Cooperators with the understanding that they will not be used in publications without their specific consent. Be concise, not formal, but do include specific data, tables, observations and methods. Send your items now to share with Cooperators.

1. A double-spaced, letter-quality hard copy of your text is essential. Follow the simple style used in the latest issue (CITY; Institution; Title; --Authors; Text). Include citations in text but please minimize the format (Authors, Journal, Volume:pp, year), and include initials to aid us in indexing and cross-linking.

2. Send an electronic version, one of the following:

a. Floppy disk identifying the platform (e.g., MS-DOS; Mac) and the word processor (e.g., Microsoft Word 5.1 or 6.0; Word Perfect), or in ASCII, with the hard copy.
b. FTP, (file transfer protocol) to teosinte.agron.missouri.edu; login (user): anonymous; password: your email address (your_account_name@your_machine). Place your submissions into the pub/mnl_submit directory, submitting graphics with the bin (not binhex) mode. Name files with the submitter's last name and use identifier numbers to distinguish multiple articles. Filenames without internal spaces are preferred. After an FTP submission, follow with a hard copy and alert us with an email to ed@teosinte.agron.missouri.edu.
c. E-mail, with article as an attachment or in the message text, followed with a hard copy.

Notes will be incorporated *verbatim* in MaizeDB.
Figures, charts and tables should be compact and camera-ready hard copies, and may be supplied in electronic form as jpg or gif images if possible.
We will progressively incorporate figures and tables as electronic images; link the articles to database objects for user access and for the development of "Zealand", the Genelist, and Indexes; and carry out flatfile indexing (WAIS indexing). As soon as an object (gene, variation, recombination experiment, etc.) is linked, the article dynamically becomes accessible to database searching. As soon as flatfile indexing is done, the full text of articles becomes searchable.
In parallel, redacting of copy (editing and formatting) in preparation for the press will proceed by desktop processing. After the deadline passes, the print copy version of the issue, simply containing the Notes received to that date, plus the Address List and the Stock Center Report, will be finalized and sent to the press. Indexes to Symbols and to Authors and Names cited in that MNL issue will be included.
